I have come across a number of consultants employing their spouse as their medical secretary. I wonder if this is a good or bad thing for all concerned?
I have in my distant past worked with my lovely husband. Even today, he is my business sounding board. In my experience, it has both positive and negative connotations!
There are a number of positive sides in this arrangement
There is a strong trust and loyalty to one another and the business.
We certainly had a shared vision, as we do for AJC, that helps in teamwork between us. We are equally invested in the business success.
We are certainly aligned with business goals and our family’s long-term plans and values.
Communication is very good between us. Having been together for such a long time, in fact, growing up together, we fully understand how the other thinks. Makes it easier for us to discuss problems openly.
On the flip side of that coin, there are a number of negative sides
Work conflicts can spill into home life, it can make it hard to separate personal emotions from business matters
Disagreements at home are sometimes carried over into the workplace, affecting our teamwork and decision-making
It can be difficult switching off from work, since business discussions can continue at home, sometimes late into the night! My husband will talk all night about business if I don’t sometimes close down the conversation. It can become mentally tiring.
Criticism or feedback can feel more personal. It can be harder to give or receive both objectively. More him than me by the way!
The increased stress and tension can affect us both regards relationship and job performance.
We are passionate about service, and committed to delivering the best client support to maximise your performance.
