Hannah spends the day with one of our consultants
What did Hannah learn spending a day at a consultant's clinic?
I had the pleasure yesterday of sitting in on one of our consultants clinics. It was great to meet patients face to face that I have corresponded with via phone and or email. I Had some lovely conversations finding out even more about each patient.
It was also a eye opener on how mentally demanding it was for the consultant. Hearing the same, continual questions from one patient to the next. Some patients are hard to open up on their thoughts towards the procedure they were having. Some patients non-stop talking, the consultant trying to get a word in edgeways! It really was a mixed bag of personalities.
The day certainly gave me a great insight into a part of a consultant’s life. I can see why a consultant needs a secretary to take a lot of the strain from them. Even with a secretary they still have more than enough to contend with.
It also made me happy to see my value in this relationship and that I can help to bring some order to their busy, sometimes chaotic days! My big takeaway........consultants need an organised, patient, cool, calm, empathetic secretary!
